Time to Breathe

November 4, 2011

I spend a lot of time on this site talking about the meaning of life (or its non-meaning), why we’re here, who am I, etc. Of late, however, there’s been a shift to dive into life rather than reflect so much on it. Lots of new recipes being explored in the kitchen, showing my 10-year-old the endless bounty available to us, letting him sample the immense array of spices (to which he crinkles his nose most times).

Many years ago I read a book by the late Leo Buscaglia, who one day took his university students back to his home where he asked them to rake up all the leaves in his yard. Then he had them bring the bags inside, dump them in the living room, and there they sat amidst a sea of fall foliage discussing the day’s lesson. I remember feeling the joy in his words and committed myself to pursuing them. And then life came along and I got obsessed with living instead of, you know, living.

For the past 6 weeks or so I’ve been toying with buying a canoe because canoeing was something I did in earlier days. Recently, a 3-hour hike delivered me to the local county line, historic markers commemorating Civil War skirmishes, and most important of all, a put-in to a quiet little tributary that runs for miles through our suburban neck of the woods. Still undecided on the canoe until today, when my wife found this magical video. Time for the canoe, and an incredible new recipe to take along for the ride.
